Generalizing a Model for Scapegoating in Contemporary Apocalyptic Thought
Northeastern Anthropological Association, 59th Annual Meeting, 2019/3/1
Abstract: Organized hate groups establish a clear other, and provide an internal narrative explaining this other’s role in threatening something the group views as intrinsic to survival. The methods in which they do this can seem intuitive, such as via social media or community outreach, but future analysis will depend on concrete models. For this paper, existing sources on specific hate movements were analyzed, and common themes from those works were isolated. Upon reviewing three disparate organizations not utilized in constructing the model, these themes continued to hold. This implies a similarity in the features of their world views, which confirms community understandings of how hate groups operate, and provides a base for future research.
